Skype is an application software that allows the user to make voice calls over the Internet Protocol. Phone and video calls between Skype users are completely free and you need to buy credit to call landlines and mobile phones. It also offers various other features such as instant messaging, file transfer, video conferencing and voice mail.
Skype is a Peer to Peer network created by Nicholas Zenstrom of Sweden and Janus Fries of Denmark. The two have previously worked together to build a file-sharing network called Kazaa. By the end of 2009, Skype had more than 500 million users.
The network's sponsor, Skype Group, was acquired by ebay in 2005, and in 2011 Microsoft bought Skype for $ 8.5 billion. The company is headquartered in Luxembourg and has branches in London, Paris, Tallinn and Prague.
